How to get Freesat to work with a Sky Q dish

So you have a Sky Q dish. And you don’t want to pay for sky anymore. So you want to use freesat, a free satellite service to get the usual tv channels but via your satellite dish.

You’re probably wondering if it’s possible to switch over with your existing dish? If you have a dish with a twin port wide band lnb that sky q uses, your lnb (the thing with the f-connector cables coming out of it) will most likely look like this…

You’re then probably wondering if the cheaper manhattan freesat sx hd box will work with it?

The short answer is, no, 100% no!

If you do try to connect the SX HD box to your dish, it will show this screen…

Like I did above, save yourself the effort and get a Freesat 4k box (I.e Arris) instead. They’re slightly more expensive but will 100% work with the sky q wideband lnb in the image above. Most televisions are 4k now anyway, and cost under £300 usually. Plus it will save you the hassle of trying to change the lnb, potentially disturbing the dish position and causing more problems. And with all broadcasters slowly moving to 4k, it’s a good investment for the future.

I’d recommend the Arris or any freesat branded 4k box. They’re pretty much the only ones that will work, as they can understand and interpret the signals coming from your existing wideband lnb. Enjoy!
